From the Ask-It-Basket: Can I ask my sponsor to help me with my plan of eating? Her plan of eating worked for her in the last forty years and I want what she has.

Yes, you can ask your sponsor to help with your plan of eating; in fact it is a very good idea to do so. However, while it may be possible that the plan of eating that your sponsor uses herself will also work for you, it’s also possible that it might not be the case.

In OA, what works for one person might be completely different for another. A good sponsor will welcome your request for help and will support you to come to your own plan of eating by encouraging you to work the Twelve Steps, establish or deepen your connection with your Higher Power, to know and understand your own manifestations of the disease of compulsive eating, and to come up with a plan that suits your recovery.

A plan of eating is like an action plan tailored to you that helps you structure, not just your intake of food and drink, but also how you eat, when you eat and, importantly, what you do not do when eating. For example, maybe don’t eat in front of the television, while standing up or in the car.

Many OAers have such a long history of dieting that they mistake a plan of eating, especially if it is given to them by someone else, as a diet they must follow. A plan of eating arises from your relationship with a loving Higher Power. Your sponsor supports that process of coming to understand what serves you best and your sponsor also acts as a sounding board to ensure that you are not in denial or making decisions based on self-will and fear. Instead of a restrictive diet, a plan of eating makes sure you are eating enough and nourishing your body in way that supports your physical and spiritual recovery.
